If you are concerned about an abnormal growth or sore in your mouth, our team at Superior Cosmetic and Family Dentistry located in Bowie, MD, can examine the area for you. A thorough oral examination is your first line of defense against oral disease. Our oral surgeons can perform a biopsy to help put your mind at ease and rule out the diagnosis of oral cancer or other diseases.

Cancers such as head and neck cancer or oral squamous cell carcinoma, which manifests through epithelial dysplasia, affect about 35,000 people each year. Don’t wait to rule out malignant lesions. Schedule an appointment with us today.

How a Biopsy Works

A biopsy is a simple procedure in which our team makes a small incision to cut out all or a part of an oral lesion. We then send this tissue to a pathologist, who will examine it under a microscope to look for any abnormalities that may be a sign of oral cancer or disease.  At Superior Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we make sure your biopsy is pain-free and as conservative as possible through our use of fine-needle aspiration.

There are two types of biopsies. Incisional biopsies require the removal of a small sample of the lesion for diagnosis. On the other hand, an excisional biopsy requires the removal of an entire lesion, which is usually a tumor. We will determine how much tissue we need to remove after examining your mouth.

We may use a local anesthetic during the short procedure. If your mouth requires stitches, it will dissolve on its own in a few days.

If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort after your biopsy, you may take oral medication to reduce the pain. Most of our patients are back to normal within no time just by keeping up with good hygiene and avoiding irritating the biopsy site. We will get back to you with your results in a few days.
